Sometimes I despair of Australians
Is it due to their colonial birth as a nation?
That convict past is an heavy burden
They can't seem to be able to shrug off.
Australia might be a modern country
But it continues to behave as a colony.
It bows and snivels to foreign powers
As long as the short term profit is huge.
It refuses to acknowledge its responsibility
In the demeaning political invisibility
Of its native population, forcing it
In a de facto untouchable people.
Mocking the traditional custodians in order
To gain control of their daily life
By sending them the army as a social civilising force.
What kind of democracy is that?
