Walking home and crossing Melbourne in the warm night
The river banks alight reflecting in the water
Were gloriously romantic in the night-time.
The high lived-in towers blocks lights
Filling the night sky and the orange town lighting,
Soothing the stark modern architecture
Everything rendered smoother and gentler
Not like day light that sharpens and focuses.
I love the feel of a lived-in city.
Melbourne has it, Sydney has not.
It makes all the difference for me.
The suburban crowds have left by train or tramways.
Leaving the local people idling before going home for the night
No trains for them, just a pleasant stroll down the large avenues
Leading to a deserved respite at an outdoor café or favourite
restaurant
In one of the numerous lanes that the city shelters.
Maybe meeting with friends to share a movie, play, concert or game.
The city is open 24/7 and not only for a shift from 9 to 5.
I like to see the town in its night apparel along the streets,
Be it grand or modest ornament of lights splashed
On flashy display boards across intersections and facades.
The stubborn fully alight tramways acquire a certain mystery
Displaying their gaudy advertisements driving no one, nowhere.
All is so different from the bustling frenetic diurnal activity of the
city.
