A promising walk

From the desolate modern landscape
Of a new suburb with its dead looking
Individual monotonous houses
On the same roads leading nowhere
Except on the one exit to the main road
Following the pathway bordering
The river with the black swans
Saluting or defying us
The only humans in view
Further down water fowl and ducks
Minding their own business
And ignoring us passing over the bridge
A wooden sign to welcome us
With the words Gorge Park.
The shock of it reverberating in us
Looking at the heavy electric lines
Desecrating the not so promising countryside
We followed them until a small track
Lead us across a paddock full of sentinels
Standing kangaroos on the alert
With only their head moving slowly
Shadowing our advance.
Spring flowers, wattles in full bloom,
What a glorious walk it turned to be,
And what a promising spot for future picnics!

Urbanisation

Strange how within a few blocks
The ambiance of a place changes
Suburbia morphs into country
Or vice versa
The roads are quieter or noisier
The blocks are larger or smaller
The houses are older or newer
One thing that does not seem to change though
Is the bleakness and ugliness of the shopping centres
More pronounced around train stations
These are simply dismal and this anarchic development
Is part of the most liveable city in the world?
One only wonders when one sees it!
L. Bailliet©
19/08/2012

Free to roam

On the dining floor of Central
One is met with one of the fifty elephants
Its theme is free to roam
Which is rather pertinent to a railway station
Roaming limited by the tracks, of course!
We had a coffee there and surprisingly
Sparrows were absolutely roaming
Between the floors and flying here
And there between the tables.
Melbourne seems to have
Bred a new species of urban sparrows
As one can see them in restaurants
Stores and shopping centres.
All over the place
They have  happily adapted to urban life.
And don't seem to mind escalators
Or revolving doors.
Another surprising thing is
That most of the human species does not seem
To notice them flying and twittering around them
On the third floor of a building!
L. Bailliet©

Some days In Melbourne

Some days I love Melbourne
Because of its universities
There is a vibrant young crowd
And today it was at its most colourful
There must have been a cosplay convention
As we saw numerous cartoons figures
Walking freely in the streets.
The best one dressed for me was
A young Tintin in a pale blue jumper
And it's too short golf pants
Accompanied by the inseparable
Thompson and Thomson with bowlers and canes.
On a more serious note RMIT held its open day
It was obviously a success judging by the thick crowd
Every one holding a leaflet entitled a promising future.
I like youth optimism but it is unfortunate
That they are to be the victims of uncontrollable greed.

Certains jours, jaime Melbourne

Wintery Market Day

Wordle: Wintery Market Day
We had to go to the market,
Today where the week-end crowds
Cruised along with children in cumbersome prams
Dogs on leash, pushing aggressively
Their way down the food alleys
For their weekly grub shopping outing.
We usually avoid it, as many of the locals do.
Not that this crowd is misbehaving
It is just thicker and the tempers are shorter.
But being a cool sunny day
The smell of the fresh product
Was so invigorating that
I could have stayed planted there
Just breathing in its complex aroma
Slowly released in the atmosphere.
Market smells in summer
Are not so pleasant
Specially at our regular
Midday hour by forty degrees
Some of the fruits can release
An almost stale whiff in the heated air
Which is too strong for me.
But here in winter
The aroma of the beetroot is easily distinguiable from the coriander
The apples versus the tangy lemons.
It is all in the air.
As I am not the buyer I can follow my nose
And go from stall to stall
Happily inhaling away the many tantalizing scents.

Ballarat

Wordle: Ballarat
Ballarat,of proud history,
Eureka Stockade for memory,
If I am right,
Has surprisingly enough,
For me anyway,
A full standing Queen Victoria Statue
With a golden victory on her globe!
Oh men of little memory!
The gold rush certainly
Did put Ballarat on the map
Once again pushing out the natives.
Ballarat the fifth largest town
Within the Australian country side
Proud of its two universities
Of its Cultural life so early celebrated
In Her Majesty's theatre
And in fact today we saw
A movie staged in the fifties being filmed.
I don't know about the glamour industry
Everyone was frozen in the icy wind
Waiting to play their part.
But art was reigning
As the traffic has been closed
To allow for the filming.
The botanical gardens
Splendidly reflected the belief
Of the earlier generations
In the future of their town
And the beautiful villas surround
A lake filled once again.

Wordle: Ballarat F
Ballarat à la fière histoire,
La Stockade Eureka pour mémoire,
Si je me rappelle bien,
La ruée vers l'or certainement

Alan Gilbert Hall

Wordle: Alan Gilbert Hall
When in Melbourne do
As the Melburnians do!
I am writing this poem
In the Alan Gilbert Hall
Having a coffee and croissant
From the Baretto Express Bar.
One thing about Melbourne's cafés
They certainly serve mean coffees
And their croissant are made
From real flaky pastry.
Waiting for a student
Who is obviously late.
The joys of private teaching!
I've discovered that I could use
The Wifi network here which is great
As I dont need to drag along
A grammar, a dictionary
And other reference books
That might be needed in a lesson.
Students and teachers surround me
It is a nice and light place
Melbourne Uni is just across in Grattan Street.
It is a nice place to teach
To individual students
And to be in a public place
As good as the Café de Flore
Or Les trois Magots!

Wordle: Le Baretto

Over The Ranges

Wordle: Over the Ranges
What lovely names they have
Emerald, Cockatoo, Gembrook
They are lovely communities
Within seventy kilometres
Of metropolitan Melbourne.
But what a world apart!
There the shops open only
For the afternoon
Or week-end trade.
One has the feeling to be
Back deeply in a fifties time warp bubble
Back with the Chinese restaurant
The only one in town mind you
A cafe open at certain hours
The real estate agent only opens
On appointment
No need for a permanent office
A library, a school or two.
A hair dresser or two.
A fish and chips shop,
Despite the fact we are
Within fifty kilometres of the sea
Not a fresh fish on display in sight
Only frozen battered and fried
And I forgot the old opportunity shop.
And that's about, folks!
An absolutely nihilistic cultural experience
Profoundly Australian in its essence.
So many dirt tracks,
I don't dare calling them roads
With very large pot holes
With a muddy sliding surface
What fun it is to drive there!
An acquired sportive skill I suspect.
Sorry, one needs a four wheel drive here
With a working winch
It took us amazingly two hours to come back.
I like nature but there is
The real isolating experience.
After all that beautiful scenery
Grand ash trees amongst the fern trees
One has the feeling to be on the edge of
A developing society.
Everything goes and specially prices
Up, up and up!

Melbourne fuglyness

The Pixel Third facade is painted!

Yes, Melbourne has two claims to fame
In the architecture department
It possesses two of the ugliest buildings
In the world.
That might even be a world record.
We all know about Federation Square
Which is basically the latest equivalent
Of George Pompidou centre
But another one, just a smaller one
Has won this award and
Is as ugly as the previous one
It's called The Pixel building
And has made the top ten in the world.
So please salute and admire!
Yes, it has to be lauded
For it is perfectly ugly on every side
To add to this, the third side is only painted on!
They did not even had the guts to make it complete!
Or was it just a shortage of cash?
Who knows and who cares?
We are stuck with it in any case!
Welcome to the fuglyness of Melbourne
World capital of ugliness pushed
Into an art form, so to say!

Coffee Break

Wordle: Coffee Break
I paused at Brunetti’s
On my way to Lygon street
For raspberry and pistachio macaroons
And a long black.
Long gone are the days
Where Brunetti was the ultimate coffee breaker
Only to be dreamt in my country town.
Although their selection
Of savory and sweet treats
Caters for almost every taste
 Their patisseries are unfortunately
So much industrialized that only
Sugar and coloring have become the main ingredients.
The pistachio macaroon is exactly as described by the above formula.
If the raspberry macaroon is tasty it's due to flavoring I suspect.
But still their coffee is right and freshly made for you
While you have to stand until your number is called.
As it is non sequential queue
You have no idea how long the wait will be.
Once called, you have to balance your coffee saucer and cup
With the serving of your favorite treat and find a seat.
Which can be an ordeal at certain times of the day.
So why is it that I often come back
For an overpriced and overvalued patisserie?
Simply because no other patisserie offers
Such a choice In Carlton.

Wordle: Pause Cafe

Prahan Market

Wordle: Prahan Market
Prahan market,
Do you call this a market?
For sure as a market square
It works well.
It's prettyish and clean
All the stalls are tidy
And the silence reigns supreme
The goods are attractively displayed
As are their price and stalls holders behind
Their neat display windows
Looking like a Coles or Woolies alleyside Show.
The market is used as a playing ground
By young mothers and their kids
Or should I say that the mothers
Are enjoying a break at the cafes
While their kids are running wild on the
Market square and bin equipment?
The organic market is lovely
But so expensive
I hope they can justify the price
But my main complaint
Is the total aseptic feel of the place
A complete lack of smells,
Of accents and ambience,
Give me every day the Queen Victoria Markets
And its vocal traders shouting
Until one can't think!
Its medley crowds of all ages!
Its food smells different according to the areas.
There at Prahan there is no smell
Synonym for plastic and toxic sterility.
Sorry my report is Prahan could do better.

Melbourne's lack of colours

Wordle: Melbourne's lack of coloursLooking at the crowd today
Along Grattan and Lygon Streets
There was a definite lack of bright colours
Where have they gone?
The sky is grey
The people are wearing black
And dark colours.
Looking at the parked cars
I noted white, light grey,
The main one being black.
In Melbourne, the dominant one for new buildings
Is either black, or dark grey with a touch of white
Come on! What is wrong with bright colours?
This is too much drabness!
Are we seeing the dust of the mining boom
Reflected in our daily life in a symbolic way?
Is it dirty money that taints our collective mind?
Where is the wild optimism of
The young and thriving Australia?
It is a sad state of things
When the only bright colours
Present in our streets
Are the advertising messages on the trams
And the wild graffiti on our walls!
Cheer up, will you Melbourne!

Wordle: Le manque de couleurs de Melbourne

En regardant la foule aujourd'hui
Le long des rues Grattan et Lygon
