Are we to let them do it again?

Sometimes I want to give up on Australians,
Their lack of compassion is incommensurable.
A deep unconscious resonance runs between
Their gutted parched up continent
And their mental inability to offer kindness
Or generosity to another human being in distress.
They turn their ingenuity into callous cruelty
Transforming the forced detention of onshore processing
Into the current atrocious offshore processing
And from today are to make it worse by dumping it
To become another country heartache.
When you believe you've reached the bottom
Another level of mental harshness is revealed
You just have to look at their criminal treatment
Of asylum seekers and refugees.
Are we to let them do it again?

Unseasonable

Unseasonable, that's what it is!
A hot dry wind pushes up
The temperature to twenty degrees
In mid July in full winter
In Victoria but still the leader
Of the opposition denies
That global warming exists
But of course that's it
The wind can't be seen,
It too is invisible,
Neither can it be traded!

Because he cares

He brings  me a fruit juice
First thing in the morning
Because he cares.
He gives me a banana
At breakfast
Because he cares.
He sets up the sun chaise
In the garden
Because he cares.
He fetches me a blanket
To keep me warm in the wind
Because he cares.
He brings me my pill
Because he cares .
He pours me a glass of water
To go with it
Because he cares.
Life with him is full
Of small gestures
Made into loved ones
All day long
Simply because he cares.

EOFY Sales

Shopping is fun
With my beloved daughter
During the end of financial year sales
'For that price they could have added the buttons'
Says she looking at the hefty price tag
Accompanying a jacket.
To a lovely red leathered tote bag
That I was stroking sensuously
I heard a hushed but distinctive
'Keep stroking it, mum'
Once she had found the so called
Discounted label.
For shame we found a dress
Dearer than the hand made
Alto recorder we just ordered
That will take two years
To be ready to play!
And they dare to call it Sales!

Plenty Valley

Plenty Valley,
Likes a outback look
Despite been just built,
If we believe the rusty sign post.
It presents itself
As the next fashionable suburb
With trains, buses to town,
Cafes and gardens.
What is has in plenty,
And that's true,
Is the number of traffic lights,
For I have counted them,
At the crossroads up to eighteen
For a three way intersection.
For the rest it is slightly lacking
As for entertainment it has none.

catching up

Today Brunetti's displayed its best,
Which turned out fine for our guest,
The salads were fresh and plentiful,
The sweets and coffees at their hottest,
The patrons were lovely and not intrusive,
Even the weather was in party mood
Everything was just at its finest.
So thank you, we had a great time
Even if we did not get to Lygon street,
It was nice catching up on some gossip
Hot and not so hot,
Every one up to their own trick,
So beware I know some and more.
What's lovely is to realize, Armidale,
That I don't miss you one bit
I've moved on and that's it!
L. Bailliet©
24/12/2012

Ode to the Panettone

At Mediterraneo you've got the choice
Of plain Panettone or
Panettone flavoured with
Chocolate, Limoncello,
Caramel, pistachio,
Earl grey, almond, hazelnut even,
With raisins and figs
With tiramisu cream,
Even Grand Marnier
And  Chantilly .
Not as good as hot brioche
Oozing with butter?
I don’t know about that,
But then I am biased!
When Christmas arrives
The world is under Panettone spell,
People fill their trolleys
After long discussions
About their favourite one
Because one is never sufficient!
That I’ll say
Simply because I can't resist
The pull of their flavour!
I simply love Panettone
And it's become my Christmas treat!
L. Bailliet©
28/12/2012

First lunch al fresco of the year

First lunch al fresco of the year! Goodie!
Sunday lunch al fresco, even better!
Setting the table outside
With the chairs around,
Getting a nice colourful tablecloth
Getting plates and cutlery,
Bringing the food platters
Tuck in! Well done everybody!
Gee, it's windy isn't?
There is no shade,
The sun is too hot,
We need an umbrella.
Bringing an umbrella
But the wind plays with it
And renders it useless.
By the way it's pollen season
The sneezes increase in number
The eyes start to itch and get teary
Oh dear, better serve coffee and dessert
Inside out of this evil wind!
Too late our lunch al fresco has been ruined!

I just needed a stamp

I just needed a stamp
They offered me shaving cream
I just needed a stamp
They offered me a picnic hamper
I just needed a stamp
They offered me travel insurance
I just needed a stamp
They  offered me a hand bag to decorate
I just needed a stamp
They offered me headphones
I just needed a stamp
They offered me a chocolate fondue set
I just needed a stamp
They offered me a soft toy
I just needed a stamp
It took me twenty minutes queuing
Going through rows of useless products
As far as I was concerned
As I just needed a stamp!

A nerdy family

After eleven thirty at night
The house is very quiet
But its inhabitants are far
From sleepy at that time.
Each one in its room
Is busy playing
Scrabble with friends or family
On the Internet
While trying to read
Or write or study
That is what I call
A nerdy family!
Now this explains why
When located in various places
This family stays linked
As long as modern technology
Is available, distance is of no concern.
That is what I call
A nerdy family!

Après vingt-trois heures trente
La maison est très calme
Mais ses habitants sont loin
D’être endormis à ce moment-là
Chacun dans sa chambre
Est en train de jouer
Scrabble avec des amis
Ou la famille sur Internet
Tout en lisant
Ou en écrivant ou en étudiant
C'est ce que j'appelle
Une famille branchée!
Maintenant, cela explique pourquoi

First anniversary

It's our first anniversary!
Congrats are in!
We've survived one year in Melbourne!
We have partook of students digs
Taken on the typical lifestyle
From alley cafés to cheap eats
Mostly Asian but delicious
Walking everywhere
Making a statement concerning
Our footprint mindless that it cost
Less not to have a car
Shopping in the numerous factory outlets
Or trying the different markets
If only for obvious economic reasons
Going to free community and cultural events
That's the advantage of being in capital city
Enjoying the parks and available green spaces
And you know what it was good
As long as it lasted!
L. Bailliet©
14/10/2012

A noisy morning

It took them more than a month
But they definitively found us
The noise polluters have struck back
With a revenge!
The two bin trucks coming
Within half an hour of each other
Making such a fracas.
The planes accompanied by
The smaller more strident helicopters.
To add to this the rain accompanied by thunder
Have done all they could
To get us up
This morning and make it insufferable.
What a noisy morning
It has been and it’s only nine!
Let me scream and add to it.
Yes, I'm awake.
Thank you so very much!
L. Bailliet ©
13/10/2012

A homey feeling

At last the house feels like a home
Disorder is back in control
Shoes are left in the middle of the corridor
Jackets are draped on the back of the kitchen chairs
Keys are strewn on the commode top carelessly
A colourful blanket has found its way
On one of the sofas
Already the daily half load of the dishwasher
Has been replaced by a full load
Three computers have migrated from
The stern study to the communal kitchen table
The spacious and orderly feel
Has disappeared for a comfy lived-in feel
Familiar chaos surrounds us
That did not take long!
L. Bailliet©
24/09/2012

Moving

That's it, the big word for today
Is moving,  to a new place.
Well, moving the furniture, that is to say
And four hundred boxes
Which have been in storage
For almost a year.
The removalists have called
To get the access code
And I have been waiting
For two trucks and four men,
 It's a big one, man!
It won't  all get inside this four bedroom house
Hopefully the double garage
Will be spacious enough.
I've been able to empty the contents
Of two bags and suitcases in the WIR
I've got my own ensuite
But the beloved has a proper bathroom!
My only issue is to know where
I am going to put it all ?
So far the only noises
Have been the screeching
Of the Cockatoos when sighting a cat
And a far away dog barking.
Bliss really!
No more traffic noise, no more trams
No more helicopters coming and going.
L. Bailliet©
11/09/2012

Six-thirty, Friday evening

Friday night, six-thirty pm,
The cars are in and out
The car park,
Their light switched on,
But barely lighting their way,
Most of them of indistinct colour
In that twilight hour and low cloud cover
They are frenetically turning around
Swishing that way or this way
Until they find an open bay
Where to park.
Most of them contain two to four people
This must be quite a popular venue
As the car park is filling rapidly
What is the name of the pub?
You have it wrong, this is Bunnings!
Gee, how much the Aussie psyche
Has changed in thirty years!

A promising walk

From the desolate modern landscape
Of a new suburb with its dead looking
Individual monotonous houses
On the same roads leading nowhere
Except on the one exit to the main road
Following the pathway bordering
The river with the black swans
Saluting or defying us
The only humans in view
Further down water fowl and ducks
Minding their own business
And ignoring us passing over the bridge
A wooden sign to welcome us
With the words Gorge Park.
The shock of it reverberating in us
Looking at the heavy electric lines
Desecrating the not so promising countryside
We followed them until a small track
Lead us across a paddock full of sentinels
Standing kangaroos on the alert
With only their head moving slowly
Shadowing our advance.
Spring flowers, wattles in full bloom,
What a glorious walk it turned to be,
And what a promising spot for future picnics!

I don't think I'll miss

I don't think I'll miss
The constant vibration
Of the corridor ventilation.
I don't think I’ll miss
The shaking of the metallic palling
On windy nights.
I don't think I'll miss
The unsettling helicopters whirring noise
Signalling incoming emergencies.
I don't think I'll miss
The three am call of the garbage truck.
I don't think I'll miss
The constant roar of the traffic on Flemington road.
I don't think I'll miss
The continuous building noises in the district
Even during the week-end.
I don't think I'll miss
The smallness of this flat.
But I'll miss my daughter's nearness
None the less.
 L. Bailliet©
4/09/2012

New housing development names

Exploring new housing developments
New road names are issued
From a rather limited selection list, it seems
The favorite is the artists, musicians.
Writers, French by preference
Zola, Sade, Alain and Sartre.
A seemingly popular category is
The plants such as Banksia, Wattle, Mimosa, blossom
Which for me deserves a double take.
The animals, ducks or swans, Kookaburras
Even a snake gully, swallows are also noted.
The landscape features are also part of it
As the Lakes, Gorge or Riverbanks.
 Lots of greenery too with
Greenwoods, greenhill, greenfields.
Then the easiest one consisting
Of first names Lily, Jane, Karen
I forgot the foreign town names
Like Marseille, Toulouse and Chamonix
Obviously someone had a great trip in France.
Then giving up on roads, streets and lanes
We have Boulevards and Avenues
Followed by Closes, Ways, Drives and Courts
Only in the planner's mind it is sensical!
I s'ppose it is better than the traditional
Queen or King's road or better still High Street.
L. Bailliet©
31/08/2012

Exploring Greater Melbourne

Exploring Greater Melbourne
One passes from the youngest district, Parkville
To the hippest one, Fitzroy
There from to the most industrialised one Dandenong
To the most cosmopolite with Glen Waverley
Or one of the most economically depressed, Croydon
Without forgetting the oldest populated Rosebud
All of them are part of Greater Melbourne
Each of them has its own atmosphere
Architecture, style and rhythm.
Their crowds are varied and different.
So far we have been east, south and north
We have reserved the west for country towns
Outside Melbourne central control.
It is rather frustrating to see the urban sprawl
Destroying the environment by giving way
To aggressive anarchic modern urbanisation.
Although the original villages are usually
Depressing shit holes without any beauty
Or soul to say the truth.
So what is the solution?
I’m afraid to say I do not know!
L. Bailliet©
2/09/2012

The dirty dozen

Have you noted
How the commercial centres
Revert all to the same dirty dozen
Shops and big brands?
Wherever you go
You find the same repetitive
Shopping malls including
The same greasy smells in provenance
Of the doughnuts stall
And of the junk food outlets
Of which a certain number is present
Where the children are always welcome
Nearby the Asian food court.
At the opposite sides the two mammoths
Of food stuff stand with their associated
Liquor shops to make your shopping
Experience so much more efficient.
The banks have chosen with care
Where to position their ATM machines
Charging you for the service
If you don't care to find the correct one.
Despite the lightspots, and the bright tiles
The clientele consists mainly of pensioners,
And single mothers with young children
Clamoring for a bubble gum
From the distributor or a go
On one of the mechanical car rides.
Dismal places they certainly are
For they have no soul.
L. Bailliet ©
22/08/2012.

Magasins d'alcool associés a rendre vos achats
