Did it move ?

Did you feel it?

Did the earth move for you

As it did for me?

Those were the questions

The waiter asked us

Last night at the restaurant.

Why, yes, we felt it.

The floor had shuddered

For quite a long time, I thought

For a phantom rumbling train.

Of course it was an earthquake,

The possibility came to my mind

But as I didn't see any hanging lights moving

Or any plates or cutlery rattling

Or crashing out of turn and 

As I only felt a slight somewhat prolonged tremor

In the floor near the concrete walls

I dismissed it and thought that the underground

Train system was not very well built

After all we were not far from Central.

Nobody making any remark around us

We continued with our meal

Until the announcement by the waiter

That we had just gone through a 5.3 earthquake.

L’avez-vous ressenti?

Est-ce que la terre a tremblé pour vous aussi?

Telles sont les questions

Que le serveur nous a demandé

Hier soir, au restaurant.

De fait , oui, nous l’avions senti.

Le parquet avait frémi

Pendant un moment, j’avais même pensé

Que c’était étrangement long

Pour le passage d’un train.

Bien sûr, c’était un tremblement de terre.

La possibilité était venue à mon esprit

Mais comme je n'avais pas vu de lumières suspendues bouger

Ou les assiettes ou de la coutellerie s’écraser

Tout autour de nous.

J'en avais rejeté l’idée et j'avais pensé que le métro

N'avait pas été très bien construit, ici à Melbourne

Après tout, nous n'étions pas loin de Central.

Je n’avais senti qu’un léger tremblement un peu prolongé

Dans le sol, près des murs de béton

Personne ne faisant aucune remarque autour de nous,

Nous avons continué notre repas

Jusqu'à l'annonce faite par le serveur

Que nous avions survécu un tremblement de terre de 5.3 !
