Sonata no 2 in A major, op. 100







I Allegro amabile

After the intermission, a first this season

We are getting into Brahms

The first few bars tell me that I know this piece

Lovely and romantic

Reminding me of hotels

By the seaside with pianos

Playing in the background during the cocktail hour

Just before the crime. You know that kind of music.

The young ingénue entering the salon

The males present suddenly prepping themselves

To catch her attention

Why , but why do I think of Mia Farrow or Jean Seberg?

Young of course and possessed of the impact 

Of sexual innocence tampered by the Lolita effect

On the male predators in the room.

They gather around her like a swarm

But she languidly stares through the open French windows

Giving on the terrace looking
On the setting sun over the ocean  

Where far away the transatlantic named the Titanic

 Takes away her lover to a new life.

Premonition or not,

She knows that she has lost him forever.

The men tease her

She dismisses them and walks away 

Her long train sweeps the sands

Where the tide comes in to meet her

Unknowingly to her tonight she will rejoin her lover

In their silvery watery grave.

Meanwhile the men have moved on a new prey

The infernal manège continues.

II Andante tranquillo

This second movement does nothing for me

The precedent was so powerful

I got completely waylaid.

The physicality of the violinist becomes

Much more pronounced, she now uses

Her legs to support the music

And from time to time she taps

The rhythm with her feet

In fact she switches from one to the other.

Once again I have lost it

As I am thinking about translation

Although translating music into impressions

And feeling is very much

What they are doing now.

III Allegro gracioso ( quasi andante)

This one  evokes boredom to me

Waiting for something to happen

Rain lashing against the window panes

On a warm afternoon

A smoky cup of perfumed tea in front of me

With a three tiered china dish

Filled with sandwiches, pastries and chocolates

In the Oriental Hotel with the large fans

Swishing the warm, heavy, humid,

Sticky air in a round of  infinite swirl in a tropical afternoon.

The audience is simply mesmerized and still.

Let's not disturb them and leave  them.

I  Allegro amabile

Après l'intervalle, qui est une première cette saison

Nous entrons dans le domaine de Brahms

Des les premières mesures je sais que je connais ce morceau

Beau et romantique.

Il me rappelle les hôtels au bord de la mer avec des pianos

Jouant en 'arrière-plan pendant l'heure du cocktail

Juste avant le crime. Vous savez ce genre de musique

Où la jeune ingénue entre dans le salon

Et les mâles de tout âge présents

Se redressent tout d’un coup

Pour attirer son attention

Pourquoi, mais pourquoi est-ce que je pense

Soudainement  à Mia Farrow ou Jean Seberg.

Jeunes et  possédant, bien sûr, l'impact

D'innocence sexuelle et l'effet Lolita

Sur les prédateurs mâles dans la salle.

Ils se rassemblent autour d'elle comme un essaim

Mais elle languissamment regarde par les fenêtres ouvertes

Donnant sur la terrasse et le soleil couchant

Où loin de là le transatlantique nommé Titanic

 Enlève son amant à sa nouvelle vie.

Prémonition ou non,

Elle sait qu'elle l’a perdu à jamais.

Les hommes la  taquinent

Elle les rejette et s'éloigne d'eux

Sa longue traine balaie les sables

Lorsque la marée monte à sa rencontre

Sans le savoir, ce soir, elle va rejoindre son amant

Dans la tombe d'argent liquide.

Pendant ce temps les hommes ont repéré une nouvelle proie

Le manège infernal se poursuit.

II Andante tranquillo

Ce deuxième mouvement ne me dit rien

Le précédent était tellement puissant

Je me suis complètement perdue dans la musique.

La physicalité du violoniste devient

Beaucoup plus prononcée, elle utilise désormais

Ses jambes pour soutenir la musique

Et de temps en temps, elle tape

Le rythme avec ses pieds

En fait, elle passe de l'un à l'autre.

Encore une fois je me suis éloignée

Je pense à la traduction

Bien que la traduction de musique en impressions

Et de sentiment est vraiment

Ce que les deux musiciens font maintenant.

III Allegro gracioso (quasi andante)

Celui-ci évoque l'ennui pour moi,

En attente que quelque chose se passe

Une pluie battante contre les vitres

Sur un chaud après-midi

Une tasse de thé fumée et parfumée en face de moi

Avec une épergne à trois niveaux en  porcelaine

Remplie de sandwiches, de pâtisseries et de chocolats

A l'Hôtel Oriental dont les grands ventilateurs

Bruissent l’air chaud, lourd, humide,

Et collant dans un tourbillon infini d’un après-midi tropical.

Le public est tout simplement hypnotisé et pétrifié.

Il ne faut pas le déranger, quittons le.
