Art stops time

Painting stops time*
I would add to the critic's thoughts
That writing stops time too.
In both arts the medium is white
A white canvas or a white page
Which are a convention
One could write on blue paper
Like Colette or use a different colour
Or paint from a black canvass
It has been done in both cases
But from the white sterility of the environment
Without any outward marks
A work of art is born
From the anguish of daily living
Yes, just for a moment
Art stops time may it be descriptive
Or abstract it reflects an imprint
Of the artistic mind at work.
It gives us a view of the uniqueness
Of what makes an artist at a definite instant.

Inner Worlds

At the Ian Potter Art Museum exhibition
Inner worlds: portraits and psychology
An interesting exploration of the tortured self
Inward looking artist Mike Parr
Of the space existing between soul and art production
Fifteen hundred self portraits
How many times does one artist
Sees himself differently?
I remember myself filling
Pages after pages with my signature
As to prove I existed as a teenager.
When is it time to declare enough is enough?
How long does it takes to recreate oneself
To push oneself to almost ego destruction
In order to connect with another facet of oneself?
Where does one go to explore one's dark side?
Is self absorption art in it-self?
Monet became obsessed with the water lilies
Growing on his ever changing pond.
One still wonders and ponders.

Love and Devotion

Love and Devotion exhibition
Was mind boggling by the devotion shown
To the art of miniature by the unknown artists
I wished I had a magnifier glass
In order to study more of the fine details
In the frames of the paintings.
The cross cultural references were amazing
Across different times and peoples.
Of the seven paintings describing
The wives of the one sultan
Only one did not include music
Amongst the pleasures therein comprised.
It reminded me of the Dame à la licorne
Exploration of the seven senses.
How Les Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry
Look so amateurish in comparison with
The miniatures displayed today!
Although it showed daily activities
Such as hunting for food and sport
And the usual glorification of war
It also included the pleasures and delights
Of education, poetry, discussion
Music, dance and love.
What a breath of culture from the Greeks,
Mongols, Persians, Turks, Indians and Chinese.
It also illustrated the arrival
Of the Western Europeans
In those far flown countries.
One becomes a witness to history
While perusing those manuscripts.
What a lovely way to travel
In the past and far away.

Pulchinella

Wordle: Pulchinella

Suite italienne  (from Pulcinella) by Igor Stravinsky (1934)

I Introduction
It is a shame that both the pianist and the violinist
Play as individuals soloists and not as a duet.
Not much feeling there.

II Serenata
They are getting slowly in the mood
It is still very mechanical and automatic
I suppose not enough common rehearsals
It is but an intellectual exercise.

III Tarantella
Slowly the violinist gets involved in the music
As she goes deeper she digs deeper
By that I mean she is using her body
To support the music by stepping firmly on her legs
To deliver the twang of a moody gypsy player
In a dark exotic smoky inn.

IV  Gavotte con due varianzoni
The mood changes suddenly
With swift and quick bow movements
And discordant banging on the piano
Curious and interesting facial expression of the pianist
Like an anxious bird in an adrenalin rush.
They are now together and the music is alive.

Slow and elegant cadence of a mating game
Firm and powerful strokes of the bow
With the pianist in and out of the music
In a trance like state
When he realizes he is playing with somebody.
The audience is utterly still mesmerized
The violin seems to follow the rhythm of my writing
It clicks with every letter that I trace on the program
It's in a staccato rhythm while I am smoothly tracing the words
What a fusional and weird experience.
It is like a game to see who can be the swiftest,
And who will give up first.
They accelerate in a crescendo and I can't follow them there
As I am restrained by the size of the paper
And the intrinsic slowness of letter tracing.
They finish abruptly knowing they have won the game.

V Minuetto finale

It is again a game but this time between the pianist and the violinist
He keeps to a strict cadenced rhythm;
While she tries to lead him astray on the violin
He is relentless, she is circumventing him,
Trying to get under his guard by playing a few bars with him
Then taking him away in high variations
That flirts until they join together
In an almost jazzy air
To freedom, joy, youth and happiness.

The audience is giving them a standing ovation.

Brent Harris at the NGV

Brent Harris exhibition at the NGV
At first I thought another bullshit artist
Playing on his university network
To become famous in the elective world
Of modern Australian artists.
But bit by bit I was taken in his search
Of a better picture using different media
Returning to the original
Leaving it, altering it, reworking it.
No, there is work here that means substance,
He even acknowledges his inspiration sources,
He communicates with the audience
At different levels
Colours, form, content.
Definitively a real artist,
Not an easy one maybe
Not comfortable either
But worth one's time.
Ambiguous at times, disturbing at others,
Elegant and powerful in his style
He does not leave one indifferent.
His series of Swamp is majestic
In its combined simplicity
Of an abstract principle to an associated feeling
Added to the touch of Matisse exploration
Make Brent Harris a great artist in my opinion.

A différents niveaux

Brahms (Sonata no 2 in A major, op. 100)

Sonata no 2 in A major, op. 100

Wordle: Allegro amabile

I Allegro amabile

After the intermission, a first this season
We are getting into Brahms
The first few bars tell me that I know this piece
Lovely and romantic
Reminding me of hotels
By the seaside with pianos
Playing in the background during the cocktail hour
Just before the crime. You know that kind of music.
The young ingénue entering the salon
The males present suddenly prepping themselves
To catch her attention
Why , but why do I think of Mia Farrow or Jean Seberg?
Young of course and possessed of the impact
Of sexual innocence tampered by the Lolita effect
On the male predators in the room.
They gather around her like a swarm
But she languidly stares through the open French windows
Giving on the terrace looking
On the setting sun over the ocean
Where far away the transatlantic named the Titanic
Takes away her lover to a new life.
Premonition or not,
She knows that she has lost him forever.
The men tease her
She dismisses them and walks away
Her long train sweeps the sands
Where the tide comes in to meet her
Unknowingly to her tonight she will rejoin her lover
In their silvery watery grave.
Meanwhile the men have moved on a new prey
The infernal manège continues.

Wordle: Andante tranquillo

II Andante tranquillo

This second movement does nothing for me
The precedent was so powerful
I got completely waylaid.
The physicality of the violinist becomes
Much more pronounced, she now uses
Her legs to support the music
And from time to time she taps
The rhythm with her feet
In fact she switches from one to the other.
Once again I have lost it
As I am thinking about translation
Although translating music into impressions
And feeling is very much
What they are doing now.

Wordle: Allegro gracioso

III Allegro gracioso ( quasi andante)

This one  evokes boredom to me
Waiting for something to happen
Rain lashing against the window panes
On a warm afternoon
A smoky cup of perfumed tea in front of me
With a three tiered china dish
Filled with sandwiches, pastries and chocolates
In the Oriental Hotel with the large fans
Swishing the warm, heavy, humid,
Sticky air in a round of  infinite swirl in a tropical afternoon.
The audience is simply mesmerized and still.
Let's not disturb them and leave  them.

Sonate n ° 2 en La majeur, op. 100

I  Allegro amabile

Wordle: Allegro amabile F.

II Andante tranquillo

Wordle: andante tranquillo F.

III Allegro gracioso (quasi andante)

Wordle: allegro gracioso

Bruissent l’air chaud, lourd, humide,

Walk along Port Philip Bay on a Blustery wind.

It is lovely to turn into a street
And to see waves at the end of it.
It has a magic akin to Venice’s about it.
The town stops where the watery element starts.
As simple as that but very effective.
Lots of blustery wind today
That means lots of choppy waves
Crashing on the breakers by the walk by the bay.

No swimmers or children playing
On the beaches, so the sand
Becomes a playground for the dogs.
No barbecues and no family grouped around
No one is lazily drinking outside.

The children and adults are on their bikes
And the walkers like us are the only ones about.
Only ones, no, I've forgotten the seagulls
Sailing the immensity of the sky above the bay in the brisk wind.

The usually flat bay water has taken
The tint of the Channel on cloudy days,
Memories of Normandy are brought back
Even the tangy smell is present
And the waves’ sprays are there too.

Parachute surfing is also present
Looks like brightly coloured kites
Are being driven from the water,
It makes for an interesting interlude.
The fresh wind coming directly
From the Antarctic clears and refreshes
One's brow and thoughts.
It is energizing as well.
Sailing boats and windsurfing are enjoying
Their out-day on the bay
Moving rapidly in front of the huge container ship
Disappearing  slowly on the cloudy horizon.
The wind, the colour of the water, the breakers
How  I wish I could paint to capture all this?
This painting would simply be called
Walk along Port Philip Bay on a blustery day.

Tout cela me ramène à Saint-Adresse.
