An English Corner

In little Paris of Melbourne
A little English corner
Treasury Place surely is.
Look at the pictures
Not only the buildings
Are in the Bath Style
The gardens follow the English pattern
The deciduous trees alleys
Lead you to thick greens lawns.
The coat of arms on the main building
Is the franco-english one
Honni soit qui mal y pense
Accompanied by  Dieu est mon droit.
They are proudly displayed
The home country is forever strong here
This is the second building I see in Melbourne
Displaying her Majesty Arms.
Only towards the end of the road
The Commonwealth building dares
To display a very inferior Aussie coat of arms
On a building whose entrance imitates
The prison gates of the Tower on the Thames.
We are still a colony,
Just open your eyes.
No wonder we are suffering
Of a cultural cringe.

Love and Devotion

Love and Devotion exhibition
Was mind boggling by the devotion shown
To the art of miniature by the unknown artists
I wished I had a magnifier glass
In order to study more of the fine details
In the frames of the paintings.
The cross cultural references were amazing
Across different times and peoples.
Of the seven paintings describing
The wives of the one sultan
Only one did not include music
Amongst the pleasures therein comprised.
It reminded me of the Dame à la licorne
Exploration of the seven senses.
How Les Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry
Look so amateurish in comparison with
The miniatures displayed today!
Although it showed daily activities
Such as hunting for food and sport
And the usual glorification of war
It also included the pleasures and delights
Of education, poetry, discussion
Music, dance and love.
What a breath of culture from the Greeks,
Mongols, Persians, Turks, Indians and Chinese.
It also illustrated the arrival
Of the Western Europeans
In those far flown countries.
One becomes a witness to history
While perusing those manuscripts.
What a lovely way to travel
In the past and far away.

The Cemetery Visit

The weight of the dead is pulling down the living
Or maybe it is the reverse
The weight of the living is pulling back the dead .
One way or the other it does not sound right.
The tombs surrounding us filling  the horizon
By their sheer number overwhelmed me today.
But the way the living have divided it
Into religious denominations terrorized me.
Their god is the same so what is the need
Of ranging them into different shades?
Even in death there is no equality.
But the most horrific of all
Was the university plaque
Dedicated to the memory of children
Used in scientific research without
Their parents consent.
It was a very disturbing and sobering sighting.

ANZAC

Wordle: ANZAC DAY

ANZAC national holiday
For Australians celebrating
The massacre of wars
Fought on alien lands
In foreign wars for foreign countries .
Should I start by Gallipoli
The original battle
Where  Aussies  and Kiwis
Lost so many
But much less than
The Brits and the French or the Turks
For that matter.
Each passing year
My disgust for the imbecility
Of it grows with the number
Of young dead soldiers
Killed in not so glorious battles
Or even worse in collateral damages.
Once dead they attain
The status of heroes.
Who remember the heroes
Fallen in Vietnam, Korea,
Iraq and Afghanistan ?
Once dead they enter
The field of forgotten lest.
ANZAC day celebrations are supposed to
Laud them once again
For the sacrifice of their life
For the mother country.
Why, may I ask, or what
Rather made their sacrifice imperative?
Which part of Australia was under attack
That thousands of men had to forfeit
Over the years their life ?
No, they went to war for the benefit
Of another country idealistic avidity.
Then if it is really to celebrate
The stupidity of war
Let's celebrate in that case
All the armed forces and not
Only the massacre of the Anglo-Saxons
Inhabitants of this continent
At the time of WWI.
It is an insult to the immigrants
Whose ancestors may have
Fought on the other side
By the hazard of history.
Stop that false patriotic celebration
This is a divisive one
That the nation does not need.

Shades of yesteryears

Wordle: The shades of yesteryears
Shades of former days
Of glorious deeds
Of yesteryears forgotten
Saved by the poet affection
As a talisman against eternal banishment.
What sacrificial blood
Does one need to partake of
To be allowed to enter their kingdom?
Dispossessed of all desires
Why is the poet in the scented fumes
Exploring the misty lanes of the labyrinth
Leading to the stony heart of marble temples,
Emptiness pulsing with the echoes of past voices
Singing lauding hymns as angels would
In a dispossessed abstruse heaven.
She is to rest in the same bed
Where human-gods have previously slumbered in.
What dust of ancient dreams will she share?
From which lonesome shore
Will the impalpable spirits rise amongst the straight reeds
From the glassy waters of a bottomless lake
To tell her the story of their historical feats?
Which battle will they choose to recount?
Which conquest will they retell?
On whose dead hero's horn the call
To wake her up will sound
To bring her back to us?
What will she remember of her nocturnal journey?

Wordle: les ombres d'hier
Souvenirs d’antan

For my English speaking friends
Wordle: Impressions of Versailles

In a court dissipated and precious, a victim of the need
Deserving suspicion about the honourable glory
Of gallantry and manners of the time,
Excessively tormented by dark and wild moods
Dispersed in a brazen folly of charming extravagances
Of the carnivals plots around the throne.

Mystical seductive kneeling tributes based
On the interest of platonic severe companies,
Of greed and chewed contained impatience of men
Whose activity is bubbling with resentment, complacency of domesticity
Versailles brought for fun and disappeared by corrupted boredom
A short and unjust supremacy.

To escape the frightening and sad splendours of Versailles
Exciting the unexpressed desires of beautiful and powerful creatures
That of a devotional bel-air promise the happy peace
Of epicurean delights in yielding to the spirit of the place
Getting lost in the artificial labyrinths
Partying to the echoes of fugitive past seasons.
