Tip tapping feet

The quintet arrives on stage
And each of its members sits down
We were faced with five pairs of feet
Ten feet enclosed in black shoes
Ten tip tapping feet
The tipper tapper of the beat
Starts with the tip of the foot touching the floor
And suddenly becoming conscious of it
The foot freezes in the midst of the upward movement
Until the musician forgets about it in the music
And the foot goes down and gets a few beats in
Until the next wave of consciousness
Picks up where the last one left.
Then the neighbour is of a different temper
That is seen by the heavy stomping of the heel
In preference of the tapping of the toes.
And  lastly but not the least
The switch happening between
The left foot to the right foot
In harmony with the tempo of the piece.
One never knows what a concert will be like!

Hommage to baroque music

Wordle: Hommage to Baroque Music

Softly insidious, softly inviting
To a further discovery
Baroque music leads one
In the long corridors of unknown corridors of one's mind
Brightly lighted by French windows
Opening onto a large terrace above
A fastidiously parted garden in symmetrical beds
Echoing the various movements of the suite.
Strenuously the blue shimmering music
Rises like fumes of an eerie fire
Slowly upwards in infinite helicoids
In the crisp clean air of a wintery sunny day
In which the colours are harmoniously dappled
Bringing one's soul to be restored
And rejuvenated by its simple contemplation
Always further upwards the music is driving one's mind
Until it no longer hears but is music.

Wordle: hommage à la musique baroque
Doucement insidieuse, doucement accueillante

If I have a regret

Wordle: If I had a regret

If I have a regret
It is to have not travelled more
When I could have done it.
It's not a question of money,
It's not a question of health,
It's just a question of safety and peace.
When I was young it was safe
To go and explore places
Like Nepal, Kashmir
Afghanistan, Iran and Egypt.
I wish I could have drifted for a week or more
In one those houseboats
On the magnificent lakes of Kashmir
Gone on an orgy of meditation
To one of these Nepalese temples
High in the Himalayas mountains
Tried to get on one of these historical digs
In the Nile valley or on a site off ancient Mesopotamia
Or visited the deep gorges of Yemen.
Yes, I know I just have the common desires
That millions of people also have.
Nowadays one can unfortunately
Strike these countries off the tourist track.
So I am limited in travels to books, TV and exhibitions.
Rather limitative don’t you think?

She

Wordle: She
She is like baroque music
In the air her laugh rings
Fast, clear, unambiguous
From one movement to the next
Her mood changes as swiftly as the wind
From vertiginous happiness to sheer sadness
Without any transition the four seasons are revealed
Dancing away in a graceful minuet
Her energy exploding in a bouquet
Leaving her exhausted for an instant
To sleep off any displeasure
She wishes to experience life to the full
And yes she is young
Showing her courage, love of life
In the way she deports herself
Her compassion is as sharp
As the edge of a knife
But true to the heart.
She is my daughter.

Wordle: Elle

Love and Devotion

Love and Devotion exhibition
Was mind boggling by the devotion shown
To the art of miniature by the unknown artists
I wished I had a magnifier glass
In order to study more of the fine details
In the frames of the paintings.
The cross cultural references were amazing
Across different times and peoples.
Of the seven paintings describing
The wives of the one sultan
Only one did not include music
Amongst the pleasures therein comprised.
It reminded me of the Dame à la licorne
Exploration of the seven senses.
How Les Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry
Look so amateurish in comparison with
The miniatures displayed today!
Although it showed daily activities
Such as hunting for food and sport
And the usual glorification of war
It also included the pleasures and delights
Of education, poetry, discussion
Music, dance and love.
What a breath of culture from the Greeks,
Mongols, Persians, Turks, Indians and Chinese.
It also illustrated the arrival
Of the Western Europeans
In those far flown countries.
One becomes a witness to history
While perusing those manuscripts.
What a lovely way to travel
In the past and far away.

Music's pleasures

Wordle: Music's pleasures
I've never visited Japan
Nor Brazil for that matter.
What do they have in common?
Not much as far as I am concerned
But both of them have developed
In their music un je ne sais quoi
Unique and original that once
You've heard it becomes
An intrinsic part of your soul.
The haunting sound of the shakuhachi
Brings me into a state of introspection
In a strict wooden monastery
Open on an utmost zen stone garden
While the smooth rhythm of the Bossa Nova
Takes me walking along sandy beaches
On warm summer nights in the southern hemisphere.
I might never experience these in real life.
But the power of music is undeniable
One's of the purest pleasures given to live.
No need of words, of efforts to communicate
The world becomes sentient with one
And harmony reigns again.

Wordle: music1

Pulchinella

Wordle: Pulchinella

Suite italienne  (from Pulcinella) by Igor Stravinsky (1934)

I Introduction
It is a shame that both the pianist and the violinist
Play as individuals soloists and not as a duet.
Not much feeling there.

II Serenata
They are getting slowly in the mood
It is still very mechanical and automatic
I suppose not enough common rehearsals
It is but an intellectual exercise.

III Tarantella
Slowly the violinist gets involved in the music
As she goes deeper she digs deeper
By that I mean she is using her body
To support the music by stepping firmly on her legs
To deliver the twang of a moody gypsy player
In a dark exotic smoky inn.

IV  Gavotte con due varianzoni
The mood changes suddenly
With swift and quick bow movements
And discordant banging on the piano
Curious and interesting facial expression of the pianist
Like an anxious bird in an adrenalin rush.
They are now together and the music is alive.

Slow and elegant cadence of a mating game
Firm and powerful strokes of the bow
With the pianist in and out of the music
In a trance like state
When he realizes he is playing with somebody.
The audience is utterly still mesmerized
The violin seems to follow the rhythm of my writing
It clicks with every letter that I trace on the program
It's in a staccato rhythm while I am smoothly tracing the words
What a fusional and weird experience.
It is like a game to see who can be the swiftest,
And who will give up first.
They accelerate in a crescendo and I can't follow them there
As I am restrained by the size of the paper
And the intrinsic slowness of letter tracing.
They finish abruptly knowing they have won the game.

V Minuetto finale

It is again a game but this time between the pianist and the violinist
He keeps to a strict cadenced rhythm;
While she tries to lead him astray on the violin
He is relentless, she is circumventing him,
Trying to get under his guard by playing a few bars with him
Then taking him away in high variations
That flirts until they join together
In an almost jazzy air
To freedom, joy, youth and happiness.

The audience is giving them a standing ovation.

Brahms (Sonata no 2 in A major, op. 100)

Sonata no 2 in A major, op. 100

Wordle: Allegro amabile

I Allegro amabile

After the intermission, a first this season
We are getting into Brahms
The first few bars tell me that I know this piece
Lovely and romantic
Reminding me of hotels
By the seaside with pianos
Playing in the background during the cocktail hour
Just before the crime. You know that kind of music.
The young ingénue entering the salon
The males present suddenly prepping themselves
To catch her attention
Why , but why do I think of Mia Farrow or Jean Seberg?
Young of course and possessed of the impact
Of sexual innocence tampered by the Lolita effect
On the male predators in the room.
They gather around her like a swarm
But she languidly stares through the open French windows
Giving on the terrace looking
On the setting sun over the ocean
Where far away the transatlantic named the Titanic
Takes away her lover to a new life.
Premonition or not,
She knows that she has lost him forever.
The men tease her
She dismisses them and walks away
Her long train sweeps the sands
Where the tide comes in to meet her
Unknowingly to her tonight she will rejoin her lover
In their silvery watery grave.
Meanwhile the men have moved on a new prey
The infernal manège continues.

Wordle: Andante tranquillo

II Andante tranquillo

This second movement does nothing for me
The precedent was so powerful
I got completely waylaid.
The physicality of the violinist becomes
Much more pronounced, she now uses
Her legs to support the music
And from time to time she taps
The rhythm with her feet
In fact she switches from one to the other.
Once again I have lost it
As I am thinking about translation
Although translating music into impressions
And feeling is very much
What they are doing now.

Wordle: Allegro gracioso

III Allegro gracioso ( quasi andante)

This one  evokes boredom to me
Waiting for something to happen
Rain lashing against the window panes
On a warm afternoon
A smoky cup of perfumed tea in front of me
With a three tiered china dish
Filled with sandwiches, pastries and chocolates
In the Oriental Hotel with the large fans
Swishing the warm, heavy, humid,
Sticky air in a round of  infinite swirl in a tropical afternoon.
The audience is simply mesmerized and still.
Let's not disturb them and leave  them.

Sonate n ° 2 en La majeur, op. 100

I  Allegro amabile

Wordle: Allegro amabile F.

II Andante tranquillo

Wordle: andante tranquillo F.

III Allegro gracioso (quasi andante)

Wordle: allegro gracioso

Bruissent l’air chaud, lourd, humide,

Music, Modern Life and Poetry

Wordle: Music, Modern Life and Poetry
Modern music and modern life
Are copies of one another
Dissonant, ugly and busy
All over the place.

The instruments are pushed to the limits
Of their normal registers.
The same exists in poetry
Really, when you think of it.
We use the same patterns of
Occurring events in daily environments
And try to integrate them
In a meaningful medium
As real as possible.

If modern music is not harmonious
It's because modern life isn't either
It's rough, uneven and egotistic
So much so like the jungle life of
The Darwinian evolution without pity.
Thus becomes the music
Atonal, arrhythmic, dissonant and strident .
Thus is modern writing and
Its associated hurried  trivial poetry.
