Summer at its worst

Woke up early
Surprised by the silence
No birds chirping their head off
The sun seemed veiled
Sky is hazed
Checking on the weather app
Sunny all day
Went in the garden
Smokey air greeted me, fire,
This is summer at its worst
Lucky if the wind does not rise
It may be contained
Brought back all the memories
Of burning ridges,
Smoke as dense as fog
And the waiting days and nights
To know which way the fire would travel
Packing the essential and precious
Keeping inside children and pets
Waiting for the time that a decision
Has to be made to stay or to leave
This is summer at its worst.

Summer 2013

 Summer is here
Accompanied by its hellish cohort
Of seasonal winds and fires
The fury of the ones feeding
The devastation of the others
Indiscriminately
Not only is Australia
A sunburnt country
But it is also prone to fire.
Mind you the aborigines
In their dreamtime
Always said so
But have we taken time
To listen to old men tales?
Four states on alert
Fighting against the odds
To save properties and lives.
Already the casualties rise
The ferry to and fro has  stopped
So tourists as well as locals
Are held in involuntary detention
In old Van Diemen's Land
Bringing back to mind
A very weird echo of time past.

L'été est là
Accompagné de sa cohorte infernale
Des vents saisonniers et incendies.
La fureur de ceux ci alimente
La dévastation des autres
Sans distinction.
Non seulement l'Australie est
Un pays brûlé par le soleil
Mais est aussi sujet au feu.
Rappelez-vous les aborigènes
Dans leur Dreamtime
L’ont toujours conté
Mais avons-nous pris le temps
D’ écouter les contes de vieillards?
Quatre États en état d'alerte
Luttant contre le sort
Pour sauver les propriétés et les vies.
Déjà le nombre de victimes augmente
Le ferry vient d’être arrêté
Touristes ainsi que locaux
Sont maintenus en détention involontaire
Dans la vieille terre de Van Diemen
Et rappelle à l'esprit bizarrement
Un écho d’un temps passé.

Summer is here

Put away your two quilts
And the coverlet
Summer is here!
No pussy footing with it,
It's here and intends to stay
Yeah! I say, I'm fed up
With sweet shy spring,
So shy we didn't even
Know it was here.
The grass is already burnt!
Yes, no problem to mow it then!
Thus keeping it short won't be such an issue.
But it gets so hot!
Wake up early and introduce
Afternoon siesta
Adapt to weather conditions
And stop pretending being in England
For goodness gracious !
Summer is here to stay!

Rangez vos deux couettes
Et la couverture
L'été est là!
Aucune délicatesse avec lui,
Il est ici et a l'intention d’y rester
Ouais!

14th of July

Today is the fourteenth of July
The French national day. I remember
The holiday in the middle of summer holidays
Wordle: 14th of JulyWatching on TV the military parade
On the Champs Élysées
Not for the roaring tanks
Nor for the planes swishing a smoking tricolor trail
Above the Arc de Triomphe
But for a sight of the French legionnaires
With their white aprons and goat mascot,
Slowly descending the avenue.
After that it was time to prepare
The long lazy summer lunch
The afternoon walk was generally skipped
As a nighttime stroll would take us
To the street balls organised by the local fire-brigade
With their fanfare marching band
To which an accordionist had been added for the occasion
But everyone had fun from the eldest to the youngest
And to finish that most popular day
A midnight fireworks display
Would send me sparkling dreams.
Nowadays we are more sober
A shared bottle of bubbly is
The amount of our celebrations!

Aujourd'hui quatorze juillet
Un long  déjeuner paresseux

Music's pleasures

Wordle: Music's pleasures
I've never visited Japan
Nor Brazil for that matter.
What do they have in common?
Not much as far as I am concerned
But both of them have developed
In their music un je ne sais quoi
Unique and original that once
You've heard it becomes
An intrinsic part of your soul.
The haunting sound of the shakuhachi
Brings me into a state of introspection
In a strict wooden monastery
Open on an utmost zen stone garden
While the smooth rhythm of the Bossa Nova
Takes me walking along sandy beaches
On warm summer nights in the southern hemisphere.
I might never experience these in real life.
But the power of music is undeniable
One's of the purest pleasures given to live.
No need of words, of efforts to communicate
The world becomes sentient with one
And harmony reigns again.

Wordle: music1

No, sorry the sky is not yellow

Wordle: No, sorry the sky is not yellow
No, sorry the sky is not yellow
Neither is the sea for that matter
Nor my morning coffee
It is better that the lawn is not yellow
Although it can be in late summer
As the leaves before falling in autumn
I prefer my king parrots not to be yellow
If you don't mind
As a matter of fact
Yellow is not my favourite colour
Even when it is described by the word golden.

Did I miss One?

Wordle: Did I miss One?

Summer saw shorts, tee-shirts
And thongs appearing in the streets
Accompanied by the all constant umbrella.
Autumn sees boots, stockings
And scarves making it along the streets
With the omnipresent umbrella.
The change from summer gear to winter one
Is done in less than forty eight hours
In less time that the leaves take to falling down.
Amazingly the trees are still wearing their coats of leaves
They mostly changed to a reddish livery, though not all of them,
Which changes the urban landscape
Making it somewhat smaller for it divides it
Into compact blocks of different hues of foliage.
In the previous town I lived in
The trees armoured their glorious crown
For a week before losing it to the bareness of winter.
Some of the spring camellias and roses are  blooming
My seasonal clock is all twisted here by the sea.
I don't know if the seasons are running late or fast.
One hopes not to have missed one in one's sleep
Which would be a first for an insomniac!

Sunset on the bay

Wordle: Sunset on the bay

The day had been so hot
We had stayed inside all day long
We decided that it would be fresher by the seaside.
It was not as there was no breeze
And the sand was releasing the heat of the day.
The beach was busy despite the late hour
People walking their dogs
Lots of late bathers,
Family groups enjoying an evening picnic
Lovers having a stroll,
All walking along the beaches.
From the bright sun of the late afternoon
In the pale blue sky
Typical of this period of the year
Slowly an aquarelle tainting appeared
As the sun  beyond the horizon disappeared
It was not the most astounding sun set
I had ever seen
But one of the most peaceful.
Surprisingly the water did not reflect the sun set
It just became darker.
As higher in the sky the sliver of the moon
Turned on the orange coloring of the vanishing sun
It was a very soothing sight.
The bay lost is width while acquiring darkness
The atmosphere changed and became intimate
The first stars appeared faintly above the bay
The animals prepared for the night
The last flights of the ducks homing for their night rest
The last flurry of  activity of the rakaly before night time.
The cats took on prowling the breakers
In search of easy preys,
The night was young
And had already lost its innocence.

The Garden

Wordle: The Garden

Closing time, the garden was ours

To explore and enjoy the vivid colours of the hydrangeas

The serpentine alleys between the tall Ash trees

The deep silence reigning under

The fan of the fronds of the Fern trees

Was broken by the trees shedding

Their bark without displaying any modesty

The garden was regaining its peaceful and tranquil atmosphere

The surface of the lake reflected the quiet majesty

Of the garden surrounding it,

The floating leaves immobile waiting for a breeze

To send them across its surface under

The gracefully arched wooden bridge

Showing the way to wander freely on the island

The stone walls half pushed, half restrained

By the tree roots echoed the tree canopy

Enclosed by the ensnaring vines

A timely warning to keep moving

The garden had started its night work

Forbidden to human awareness

The atmosphere had subtlety changed

The shadows gradually turned into darkness muting

The colourful flowers beds lost their shimmering effects

And their greyish dullness fuzzed their borders.

The open gates let us escape to the car park

To reality we were back.

Picnic

Wordle: Picnic
The dog was busily crunching
A few feet away on the bones thrown to her.
A nice patch of grass under an exotic tree had been found,
They had spread the food on the blanket
And had happily tucked in.
They had finished their picnic
The ruins of the meal were
Still openly displayed,
Their conversation desultory.
Although in the height of summer
The absence of pesky flies was remarked on
Upon which a bee zoomed on the chicken remains.
They tried to wave it away,
Being always nervous with bees around.
The bee whizzed back to the meat,
They swapped it away again,
The bee flew around them,
Dashed back to the chicken breast
And started to munch on it.
They gave up on swatting it
And simply wondered aloud
“Huh, Is this normal behavior for a bee?”
The bee continued to suck on the meat juices
They laughed when the bee did not answer.

Summer night concert

Wordle: Summer night concert

It’s a summer night in the park,
The crowd is sated after their picnic.
The weather holds,
Despite hovering black clouds above,
The music rolls over them
In powerful brassy waves.
Half lying down on the grass
The rest playing with their smart phones.
The orchestra alight and on fire
Giving them the best of Romantic music.

Entranced by the mechanical droning of the cellos
In the distance and the heat
The last row players has flattened
To a rank of black carton cut silhouettes
The violins have coalesced into
The indistinct body of an Indian avatar
With numerous arms and heads.
The soprano is the only living one
In her pink and black frilly frock
Her love complaint fills the firmament,
Empty witness of an eternal love.

Lazy day!

Wordle: Lazy day

What did you do today?
I had a lazy day today
Read until one
Had fruit platter and coffee in bed
Read some more until three
Had salmon and salad for lunch
Then read some more
Had a snooze afterwards
In the heat of late afternoon
Walked the dog in the park
Then had a drink and nibbles
And here we are
At the end of a lazy day.
Some lazy summery day !
