Back to uni

Forcibly the University
Calls to its transient and elusive students,
To answer its ever obdurate appeal.
They flock back to its labyrinthian halls,
Filled with experiences newly acquired,
During the winter break.
Like manifold migrating birds,
Their resilience somewhat alienated
By this harsh competitive environment
In this cold clime
Without friends and family,
They gather around.
It will take them until spring
To disperse again and travel
Towards places where love
Is warm and natural
To flower and grow over summer .
New waves will replace them,
Hitting or deserting our shores in turn
To the rhythm of graduations' round.

Summer at its worst

Woke up early
Surprised by the silence
No birds chirping their head off
The sun seemed veiled
Sky is hazed
Checking on the weather app
Sunny all day
Went in the garden
Smokey air greeted me, fire,
This is summer at its worst
Lucky if the wind does not rise
It may be contained
Brought back all the memories
Of burning ridges,
Smoke as dense as fog
And the waiting days and nights
To know which way the fire would travel
Packing the essential and precious
Keeping inside children and pets
Waiting for the time that a decision
Has to be made to stay or to leave
This is summer at its worst.

Summer 2013

 Summer is here
Accompanied by its hellish cohort
Of seasonal winds and fires
The fury of the ones feeding
The devastation of the others
Indiscriminately
Not only is Australia
A sunburnt country
But it is also prone to fire.
Mind you the aborigines
In their dreamtime
Always said so
But have we taken time
To listen to old men tales?
Four states on alert
Fighting against the odds
To save properties and lives.
Already the casualties rise
The ferry to and fro has  stopped
So tourists as well as locals
Are held in involuntary detention
In old Van Diemen's Land
Bringing back to mind
A very weird echo of time past.

L'été est là
Accompagné de sa cohorte infernale
Des vents saisonniers et incendies.
La fureur de ceux ci alimente
La dévastation des autres
Sans distinction.
Non seulement l'Australie est
Un pays brûlé par le soleil
Mais est aussi sujet au feu.
Rappelez-vous les aborigènes
Dans leur Dreamtime
L’ont toujours conté
Mais avons-nous pris le temps
D’ écouter les contes de vieillards?
Quatre États en état d'alerte
Luttant contre le sort
Pour sauver les propriétés et les vies.
Déjà le nombre de victimes augmente
Le ferry vient d’être arrêté
Touristes ainsi que locaux
Sont maintenus en détention involontaire
Dans la vieille terre de Van Diemen
Et rappelle à l'esprit bizarrement
Un écho d’un temps passé.

Summer is here

Put away your two quilts
And the coverlet
Summer is here!
No pussy footing with it,
It's here and intends to stay
Yeah! I say, I'm fed up
With sweet shy spring,
So shy we didn't even
Know it was here.
The grass is already burnt!
Yes, no problem to mow it then!
Thus keeping it short won't be such an issue.
But it gets so hot!
Wake up early and introduce
Afternoon siesta
Adapt to weather conditions
And stop pretending being in England
For goodness gracious !
Summer is here to stay!

Rangez vos deux couettes
Et la couverture
L'été est là!
Aucune délicatesse avec lui,
Il est ici et a l'intention d’y rester
Ouais!

The harsh mistress

Fashion is a harsh mistress
The season changes
So does she.
The dark colours are off
Flowers are invading
The legs of trousers
With bright bouquets
That favour the slim limbed nymphs
Full of youth and fun.
The shoes and bags are accessorised
And turn to light ice cream hues.
I will look so retro and out of date
This coming spring
That I might as well make a statement of it.
Hey, I already feel better
Bring it on, then.

Hé, je me sens déjà mieux
Alors n’hésitons plus

A walk in Royal Park

An invigorating walk today
In the Royal Park
The air overloaded with scent from
The wattles in full bloom.
Oh, how much I love those
Odorant yellow pompoms!
The last hurrah of winter,
People relaxing in the warmish sun
Taking time to say hello to strangers
Dogs rolling happily
In the new grown grass.
An older lady trying to catch up
With her walker that she had thrown
In front of her, for exercise sake.
 Spring is in the making
And no mistake!
It was lovely to walk
The three of us
As per the old days
Talking desultory of everything
And anything under the sun.
A most invigorating walk !

Une promenade revigorante
Aujourd'hui au  royal parc
L'air surchargé de parfums provenant
Des mimosas en pleine floraison.
Oh, comme j’aime ces grappes de
Pompons jaunes odorants!
